5-Star Reviews: Yelp

Astoria’s 5-star reviews: 12/29/12-1/5/13

Congratulations to the Astoria business that got Yelp’s highest honor this week.

In this edition: Finally! Once and for all, we’ll discover who really and truly makes THE BEST PIZZA! THE BEST BUREK! And THE BEST DELI SANDWICH! in Astoria. (Or at least, we’ll get three Yelpers’ opinions.)  The Thirsty Koala got an amazing TEN 5-star reviews this week. Note to the owners: I’m sure there are lots of great photos of your food online, but we don’t get to see a lot of koalas in this space so the cutie with the black nose wins. —Tracy Infield

thirsty koalaWeek #2 on Yelp yielded TEN 5-star reviews for The Thirsty Koala 35-12 Ditmars:  “Holy Moly the lamb chop Lollies are to die for” … “I love that they offer vegan and vegetarian options, as well as gluten free” … “The menu was much more extensive than we’d thought it would be—a great variety of authentic Australian dishes along with some safer options (like burgers) with minor Australian twists for the less adventurous.”

FOUR 5-star reviews for Il Bambino 34-08 31st Ave “Waitstaff were very laid-back but really attentive and helpful with menu questions (although I really don’t think you can go wrong here) … Don’t forget to try the decadent Nutella hot chocolate, and my friends said that their freshly-brewed coffee was pretty on point as well.”—Trevor B., Baltimore, MD (1/4/13)

Basil Brick Oven Pizza 28-17 Astoria Blvd “The best pizza I’ve had in Astoria… I can’t stop going back! And with 40+ different pizzas, I want to try a new one every time. I recommend trying the Pizzucca pizza, which has a pumpkin walnut spread with Italian bacon, cheese and basil. Sounds a bit weird, but it’s excellent when you’re in the mood to try something different from your typical pizza. Also conveniently located by the Astoria Blvd NQ stop, definitely worth a try!”—Tiffany W., Astoria, NY (1/4/13)

Meaty, flaky goodness from Djerdan.

Djerdan Astoria 34-04 31st Ave “Best Burek I’ve ever tasted in a restaurant. Try it with the yogurt it’s really delicious. I also got the meatballs and pitta, i loved every bite.”—Drita L., London, UK (1/4/13)

Sal, Kris, & Charlie’s Deli 33-12 23rd Ave “This is hands down the best deli sandwich in Astoria. That statement should say a lot as there are some fantastic delis around… D&F and Sorriso to name a few… You would have to be extremely hungry and a big boy to finish a hero solo, they are huge! Despite a long line, service was really fast too!”—Dustin K., Queens, NY (1/3/13)

Chinese Gongfu Tui-Na 29-28 Ditmars “Great place!

They really do beat the crap out of your muscles, but you can handle it, and your muscles will love you for it afterward. Though if you’re in the market for this sort of thing, I think you know the drill. Definitely not of the ‘massage shouldn’t hurt’ school.”—Shannon M., Astoria (1/2/13)

TWO 5-star reviews for Bagels & Brew 43-05 Broadway, including this one: “I feel obliged to give these guys a sixth star because I walked in the other day and they handed me a mimosa. Ridiculous. Hadn’t even ordered yet. Was just getting an egg sandwich.

It’s kind of insane how well-run this place is. Love it.”—Zach V., Jackson Heights, NY (12/30/12)

TWO 5-star reviews for Euromarket 30-42 31st St, including this one: “ I love it here. The beer selection is fantastic. If you want one beer, you can buy one beer. And it doesn’t have to be Coors or Bud or Miller. You can have your choice of over 400 different brews. My husband and I frequent this place even though it’s not as close as other places we could go for our beer needs.”—Raisa B. Astoria, NY (12/31/12)

Sugar Freak 36-18 30th Ave “Comfort food. Cinnamon sugar fried chicken. Hush puppies. Whiskey. Root Beer. Chocolate caramel bread pudding …  All amazing and make this northerner want to head south for the winter. All of this set in a ramshackle, vintage, thrown together atmosphere that is fun and inviting. I really think the owners did a fantastic job with the decor, menus—hell the bathroom is even awesome.”—Melissa P., Astoria, NY (1/4/12)

Butcher Bar 37-08 30th Ave “Kathy and her staff worked hard to put together an incredible [wedding] menu that our guests still rave about. The menu included pulled pork sliders, brisket, roast beef, ribs, potato salads, and a few other veggies to balance it out. To top it all they even offered a suckling pig as the centerpiece! … Kathy and crew were incredibly professional on the actual wedding day so that we were able to relax and enjoy the evening.  We were overjoyed with their service and would recommend them to anyone looking to do something a little different for their wedding.”—DJ N., Astoria, NY (12/30/12)
